<>MR. AARON GANTT NAMED DIRECTOR OF BANDS

Spartanburg School District Seven is pleased to announce that Mr. Aaron Gantt has been named Band Director at Spartanburg High School. Mr. Gantt will oversee the district’s band program and will also conduct the marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, and color guard. Mr. Gantt is currently serving as the Assistant Band Director at SHS, a position he has held since 2005. He will officially assume his duties on July 1, 2009.

Mr. Gantt received a Bachelor's of Music from Furman University and a Master's of Music from the University of South Carolina.

In the marching band arena, Mr. Gantt has worked with the Furman University Paladin Regiment and the bands at Boiling Springs High School, Irmo High School, Lassiter High School, Byrnes High School, and Wagener-Salley High School.  At those schools, Mr. Gantt also taught the color guard section of the marching band.  Mr. Gantt has received numerous accolades – he served as a color guard member for the nine-time world champion Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps, with whom he received the Distinguished Service Award. He was also a member of the 4-time WGI finalist A Class Champions Infiniti Winter Guard.

Mr. Gantt was a member of the University of South Carolina Symphonic Band, James K. Copenhaver, Conductor, and also a member of the University Assembly Saxophone Quartet, has performed at the United States Navy Band Saxophone Symposium, State and Regional MTNA, and the North Carolina Chamber Music Competition.  He also studied saxophone with Dr. Cliff Leaman, Dr. Matt Olson, and Mr. Sam Skelton.

Upon being notified of his selection, Gantt commented, “I am honored that I have been chosen to lead this exceptional program in our great school district. I am ready to work hard to ensure our band program will perform at the high levels that our school and community have come to expect.”

Dr. Terry Pruitt commented that Mr. Gantt’s selection will enable a seamless transition to follow Kevin Horton, who will be leaving the district at the end of the school year to direct the band at Chapman High School.  “We want to thank Kevin for his many contributions to our band program.” Pruitt further noted, “We are very fortunate that Aaron will be leading our band program. He has gained the knowledge through his teaching and performing experiences to enable our band program to compete and work at a nationally competitive level.”
